What makes it read as a poppy
A field poppy has four petals, not five or six: two broad ones in front and two behind, thin as tissue and creased where they were folded in the bud. At the middle is a dark ring of stamens round a seed head whose flat lid is marked with rays. These files keep all of that. The stems are thin, bend to and fro and carry short bristles; the bud hangs its head on a stalk bent like a crook; and the seed head is a ribbed urn under a crown.
The bristles are small triangles about 3 mm long at 100 mm. They cut cleanly in vinyl and card, but in felt or thick wood they are too small to matter, so use the simple poppy or the flower from above for those.
Sizes and colours
The flower from above has crease slits about 1.4 mm wide and stamen dots about 3 mm across when it is 100 mm wide. Cut it at 70 mm or more in card. For a lapel poppy of 40 to 50 mm, use the simple poppy or the paper template. Field poppies are scarlet with a black centre; Californian poppies are orange and Welsh poppies yellow, and the layered file works for all three if you change the petal colours.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make a poppy to wear from the paper template?
Cut the two petal pairs in red card or felt, the fringed disc and the button in black, and the leaf in green. Lay one petal pair across the other at right angles, then the fringe, then the button, and fix them through the centre holes with a brad or a stitch. Glue the leaf behind and add a pin.
Which poppy is best for a small remembrance sticker?
The simple poppy with four petals. It has no creases or stamen dots, its channels are 2 mm wide at 100 mm, and it still reads as a poppy at 30 mm across in vinyl.
Will the hairs on the stems survive cutting?
In vinyl and card, yes, from about 80 mm tall. They are short triangles with a base as wide as the stem is thick, so they do not tear off, though the tips round over at small sizes. If you would rather have smooth stems, weld a thin rectangle over each stem in your cutting software, or pick a design without stems.
