Lashes that cut cleanly
Eyelashes are the hardest part of an eye to cut, because each one ends in a point. Here every lash is about 2.5 to 3 mm wide where it joins the lid and tapers evenly, so the blade has room to turn. In vinyl the pairs of lashes cut well at 80 mm wide and above. Smaller than that, pick the unicorn eyes, whose three lashes are over 4 mm thick at the root.
Weed lashes from the root towards the tip, never the other way, or the points lift with the waste. On heat transfer vinyl, press with firm pressure and peel slowly along the lashes rather than across them.
Pairs, spacing and mirror images
The pairs come as two loose pieces so you can set the gap yourself. They are drawn close together to keep the file compact. On a human face the eyes sit about one eye-width apart, so slide them outwards to suit. For a unicorn cake or a plush toy, move them further apart again and lower on the face for a sweeter look.
The single designs are drawn as a right eye, with the lashes sweeping to the right. Mirror the file in your cutting software to make the left one.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big should unicorn eyes be for a cake?
For a round cake 15 to 20 cm across, cut the pair at about 9 to 12 cm wide, which makes each eye 4 to 5 cm. Cut them from black fondant with a craft knife round a paper print, or from black card for a topper that is not eaten.
How do I make a matching left and right eye?
The pairs here already hold a left and a right eye as mirror images. For the single eyes, duplicate the design and flip the copy horizontally in your cutting software.
Which eye works for a pumpkin or a plant pot face?
The closed eyes with eyelashes and the set with eyebrows are the usual choice: they are simple, they read from across a room, and they cut from permanent vinyl at 60 to 100 mm wide for a pot or a pumpkin.
