Virgo in the zodiac

Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac and its figure is the maiden. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Virgo from 23 August to 22 September; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Virgo as an earth sign, and its ruler is Mercury.

The glyph is three arches whose last stroke loops back across itself. The constellation here is Virgo, drawn from the catalogue positions of 13 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Spica, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.

Cutting the Virgo maiden

The maiden is a tall, narrow figure: at the library’s size she is 100 mm tall and about half as wide. The gown is one broad shape, so the only fine parts are the stalk of the wheat, which is about 3 mm wide, and the grains at its tip. In vinyl and card she cuts well from about 80 mm tall. For plywood or acrylic go to 150 mm or more, or use the head in profile, where the wheat is cut into the hair as holes and nothing stands free.

The Virgo glyph has one closed loop, where the last stroke crosses back over itself. On the badge and the celestial card a small bridge holds the middle of that loop in place; on the plain glyph and the ring it is simply an open window.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What are the dates for Virgo?

By the usual tropical dates, 23 August to 22 September. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.

Why does the Virgo maiden hold wheat?

The old star atlases draw the figure of Virgo holding an ear of grain, and the constellation’s brightest star marks it: the name Spica is Latin for an ear of wheat. The silhouette and the line drawing show the ear held up in one hand, and the head in profile has grains of wheat cut into the hair.

Which stars are in the Virgo constellation design?

Thirteen. Spica is the five-pointed star near the bottom. Above it Porrima, Minelauva, Vindemiatrix and Heze outline the body, a chain runs west through Zaniah and Zavijava for the head, and two chains run east for the legs. Virgo is the largest constellation of the zodiac, so the pattern is wide and open.
