Pictures that say it without a slogan
Most retirement files are a joke in capital letters. These are mostly pictures, so they suit a card signed by the whole office as well as a shirt: the rocking chair, the hammock and the lounger for the rest to come, the pocket watch for the years served, and the alarm clock with a bar through it for the mornings that are over. The watch is stopped at five o’clock and the alarm is set to seven, the two ends of a working day.
Three designs carry words: a seal that reads RETIRED, a board with DAYS TO GO under an empty window, and a Happy Retirement sign. The window on the board is left blank on purpose. Back it with chalkboard vinyl or slide a card behind it and change the number each morning.
Sizes and what to watch
The solid pieces, such as the seal, the clock and the sign, cut well in card from 80 mm wide. The chair, the fishing rod and the hammock are made of rails, ropes and lines about 2 to 5 mm thick at 100 mm, so give them 150 mm or more in card and 200 mm in wood. For a cake topper, cut the Happy Retirement sign 150 mm wide from glitter card and tape two skewers behind the bar. On a shadow box, the chair on the porch has a flat base and stands on the bottom ledge.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Why does the clock have no hands?
Because nobody is timing the day any more. The dial keeps its twelve marks and the hole in the middle where the hands were fixed, and the hands are simply gone. It is one piece with a flat base, so it can stand on a shelf or along the bottom of a frame.
How do I use the countdown board?
Cut it from card, wood or acrylic and fix something you can write on behind the window: chalkboard vinyl, a dry-wipe sheet or a pad of numbered slips. At 200 mm wide the window is about 124 mm by 68 mm, which takes a three-figure number.
Which design suits a leaving card from colleagues?
The pocket watch or the rocking chair on the front, with room to sign round it. For someone with plans, pick the picture that fits them: the fishing rod, the hammock or the sun lounger. The work pass on its peg is the one for an office door on the last day.
