Free seashell SVG files

Free seashell SVG files: scallops plain, bold, outlined and as a mandala, a pair for a mermaid top, an open clam with a pearl, a conch, a nautilus, an auger, a cowrie and a sand dollar, plus a set of five and a border. The spirals and fans are worked out by code, so every rib is evenly spaced.

Grooves, ribs and how small a shell can go

Every shell is 100 mm on its longer side at file size. What makes a flat shape read as a shell is its grooves, and those are the thin cuts. On the scallop they are slits about 1.5 mm wide that taper to a point at each end; on the nautilus the chamber walls are about 1.7 mm. A blade handles those in vinyl and card from about 70 mm up. Below that, use the bold seashell, whose grooves are about 3.5 mm wide, or cut the scallop without weeding the grooves.

Shells have no thin limbs, so they are good in wood and acrylic. The cowrie and the sand dollar make neat earrings and pendants at 30 to 40 mm; add a small hole near the edge in your cutting software. The auger has one sharp tip, which is a point and not a weak neck.

For a layered look, cut any shell twice: once as it is in a sandy colour, and once with the grooves left unweeded in white or pearl. Offset the top layer by a millimetre and the grooves show as a shadow.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which seashell do I use for a mermaid costume or party?

The pair of seashells for a mermaid top is drawn for that: two bold scallops joined by a bead. Cut it at 200 mm or wider in iron-on glitter vinyl for a shirt. The bold seashell on its own makes matching cupcake toppers and banner pieces.

How do I use the monogram seashell?

The round window in the fan is an open hole about 30 mm across at file size. Type an initial in your cutting software and size it to fit, then either weld it to the edge of the window or cut it from a second colour and place it in the middle.

Is a sand dollar really a seashell?

Strictly, no: it is the skeleton of a flat sea urchin. But it is collected, displayed and crafted with seashells, so it is here with them. The five petals and five slots are how the real thing looks.
