Free wheat SVG files

Free wheat SVG files drawn by code: single ears, bearded wheat with awns, a curved ear, three ears, crossed stalks, a bound sheaf, a border, a field and loose grains. Every grain stands clear of the next and joins the stalk with its full width.

Grains, gaps and awns

What makes an ear of wheat read is the herringbone of its grains, so here each grain is drawn separately with a gap of about a millimetre between it and the next. The grains are 8 to 12 mm long and about 4 mm wide when the file is 100 mm tall, and each one is welded to the stalk along its base. In vinyl the gaps weed cleanly from 80 mm tall. Below that, or in card and wood, use the wheat icon, whose five pairs of fat grains have wider gaps.

On the bearded wheat every grain carries an awn, the long bristle of barley and old wheats. The awns start 1.7 mm wide and narrow to a point, so they shorten slightly at small sizes but do not break off.

Where wheat belongs

Wheat says bread, beer and harvest. It suits bakery labels and bread bags, kitchen canisters marked flour, thanksgiving and harvest-festival tables, farmhouse signs and brewery marks. Cut it in gold or ochre on a dark ground, or burn it into a wooden bread board with a laser: the sheaf at 120 mm fills the corner of a board nicely.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What is the difference between the ear of wheat and the bearded wheat?

The bristles. Bearded wheat has an awn growing from every grain, which gives the ear a feathery outline; the plain ear has none. Both are real: modern bread wheats are often awnless, while barley, rye and many older wheats are bearded.

Can I curve the wheat round a circle?

The curved wheat ear follows part of a circle about 220 mm across at its own size. Scale it to change the curve, and use two mirrored copies, stalks together, to cradle a name.

How do I colour the sheaf?

Use the layered wheat sheaf: it has the straw, the ears and the band as three pieces. Pale yellow straw, a deeper gold for the ears and a red or brown band look most like the real thing.
