The farmhouse windmill
In farmhouse decor a windmill means the water-pumping kind: a wheel of many thin blades with a tail vane, on a tall steel tower. The wheel is the part people hang on walls, so it is here twice on its own, whole and as a half. Its eighteen blades are tied together by an inner and an outer ring, which is how the real thing is built and is also what stops the blades from being eighteen loose pieces.
On the windmill head the rings are 4 to 5 mm wide and the spokes 4 mm when the wheel is 100 mm across, so it cuts well in wood and metal as well as vinyl. On the full windmill the wheel is smaller, about 50 mm across at 100 mm tall, and the rings and tower braces are about 2 mm wide: cut that one at 150 mm or more in wood.
Dutch mills, turbines and pinwheels
The other three kinds are here for the people who mean something else by the word. The Dutch windmill has four lattice sails, each a frame with three rungs and a middle rail, on a tower with a gallery. The wind turbine is three slim blades on a mast. The pinwheel is the paper toy on a stick. None of them shares a part with the farm windmill, so pick by shape.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I add a name to the windmill?
Use the farmhouse windmill with a blank sign. The sign across the tower is about 55 mm wide and 8 mm tall between its two cut lines when the windmill is 100 mm tall. Type the name in your cutting software and cut it out of the sign, or cut it from a second colour and lay it on top.
Can I cut the windmill head from metal or wood?
Yes. It is the sturdiest design in the set: at 300 mm across the blades are about 35 mm wide at the tip and the rings 12 to 15 mm wide. Cut on a laser or a plasma table, it makes the wall piece sold as a windmill head. The half windmill is the same wheel cut across with a flat bar to stand on.
Why eighteen blades?
Farm windmills carry many blades because they need turning force at low wind speed, not speed. Eighteen is a common number on real mills, and it leaves a gap between blades wide enough to cut and weed cleanly.
