Christmas and winter

Free Christmas lights SVG files

Free Christmas lights SVG files: strings of bulbs on a sagging wire, single bulbs, a tangled knot of lights, borders, a circle, a heart and a wreath. In every string the wire runs through the sockets, so the whole thing cuts as one piece.

Cutting a string of lights

The wire is the fragile part. Once a file is scaled to 100 mm it is about 2 mm wide (1.9 to 2.7 mm, depending on the design), which is fine for vinyl and card but thin for wood. For plywood or acrylic, cut the strings at 200 mm or wider, or thicken the wire with a small outward offset in your cutting software.

In vinyl, weed from one end of the wire to the other and lift the bulbs as you reach them; pulling a bulb first can stretch the wire. Use transfer tape for the whole string so that the sag keeps its shape.

Colouring the bulbs

Real lights are many colours on one green wire. The layered design gives you that directly: one dark layer for wire and sockets, then the glass of the bulbs in four colours. For the one-piece strings, cut the whole string in black or dark green, then cut the same file again in bright colours and stick just the glass of each bulb on top. The loose Christmas light bulbs in five shapes work the same way for scattering over a card or a window.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a longer string of lights?

Use the Christmas lights border. Its wire is straight and runs to both edges, so copies placed end to end join into one line: duplicate it, butt the copies together and weld. The sagging strings join at their pins in the same way.

Can I put a name inside the circle or the heart?

Yes. The circle frame, the heart and the monogram frame are open in the middle. Type your text in your cutting software, size it to sit inside the wire with a few millimetres to spare, and cut it as a separate piece or in a second colour.

Will the tangled lights weed in one go?

They cut as one piece, but the loops of wire close off small pockets that each need lifting out. Cut the tangle at 150 mm or wider and use a pin for the smallest pockets.
