Capricorn in the zodiac
Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac and its figure is the sea-goat. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Capricorn from 22 December to 19 January; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Capricorn as an earth sign, and its ruler is Saturn.
The glyph is a pointed stroke and an arch that ends in a loop and a curled tail. The constellation here is Capricornus, drawn from the catalogue positions of 10 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Deneb Algedi, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.
Cutting the Capricorn sea-goat
The sea-goat is a solid, compact figure: the fish half is one broad curl and the goat’s chest is nearly as wide. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The fine parts are the two horns, which taper from about 6 mm to a point, the beard, and the lifted foreleg at about 4 mm. Vinyl and card hold all of that down to 60 mm. In plywood or acrylic cut the sea-goat at 120 mm or more so the horn tips are not brittle.
On the versions in the crescent moon, the ring of stars and the layered tile the fish half carries small scales cut as fine arcs. They are holes, so on dark vinyl they show the surface behind. If you want the plain shape, use the silhouette, which has no cuts inside it at all.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What are the dates for Capricorn?
By the usual tropical dates, 22 December to 19 January. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.
Why is Capricorn a goat with a fish’s tail?
The figure is very old: a goat-fish appears on Babylonian boundary stones more than three thousand years ago, and the Greeks and Romans kept it for this constellation. Many modern designs show a plain goat instead, so this set has both: the sea-goat as the main figure, and a goat’s head from the front.
Which stars are in the Capricorn constellation design?
Ten, from the constellation the sky maps call Capricornus. They make a broad arrowhead. Algedi and Dabih are the pair at the western corner on the right, Psi and Omega Capricorni the southern point, and Deneb Algedi, the brightest and the five-pointed star here, sits with Nashira at the eastern corner on the left.
