Pictures for a job with no single tool

A nurse has a stethoscope and a lineman has a pole, but social work has no one object, so these designs show what the work is for: a child kept safe, a family kept together, someone listened to. None of them uses the badge or logo of an agency or a professional body, and none carries wording, so you can add a name, a team or a line of your own in your cutting software.

The figures are drawn in simple, heavy parts. On the social worker holding hands with a child at 100 mm tall the arms are about 6 mm wide and the string of the balloon, the thinnest part, is about 2 mm. Cut that one at 80 mm or more. The heart with a grown-up and a child, the tote bag and the speech bubbles are solid shapes with a few openings and work as small stickers.

Small figures and joined hands

Three designs have small people in them: the family under one roof, the umbrella and the ring of people. Their arms are about 3 mm wide at 100 mm, and every figure is joined to a floor, a ring or a neighbour so that nothing is loose. Keep these at 90 mm or more in vinyl, and weed from the outside in. For wood or acrylic, the silhouette at a house stands on a straight strip and can be stood upright in a shadow box.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Is the hands and heart design an official social work symbol?

No. It is a plain picture of two hands holding a heart with two people in it, drawn for this set. It copies no agency, union or professional body, so you may cut it, sell what you make with it and put your own team name beside it.

How big is the opening in the ring of people?

About 45 mm across when the design is 100 mm wide, which is room for two or three initials or a short team name on two lines. The ring round the opening is about 5 mm wide, so letters welded to it will hold.

Which design is best for a gift for a social worker?

The grown-up and child holding hands and the heart with the two of them cut out are the ones most people choose for shirts, mugs and tote bags. For a team, use the ring of people and put the team name in the middle.
