Stripes that do not cut the pin in two
The two stripes round the neck are what make a pin a pin, and a stripe cut right across would leave the head as a loose piece. Here each stripe is two short slots with a bridge between them down the middle of the neck. On the single pin at 100 mm tall that bridge is about 3 mm wide, and on the rack of ten it is a little over 2 mm, so cut the rack at 100 mm or larger and weed the stripes last.
Where a ball stands in front of pins, or one pin in front of another, the shape behind is cut back with a slim gap that stops just short of its own edge. Those short stops are what hold the group together, so do not trim them away. For iron-on on a league shirt, 200 to 250 mm across the back is usual for the strike or the rack. The single pin, the ball and the monogram frame are plain shapes that go down to 40 mm for towels, bag tags and score sheets.
Party, league and lane signs
For a bowling party invitation, the ball and three pins or the crossed pins sit well at 50 to 70 mm in card. The split design is made for a name: it comes as loose pieces above and below a clear band about a sixth of its height. The lane is drawn in perspective with the arrows and dots where they are on a real lane, which makes it a good backdrop for a cake topper or a shadow box with the bowler in front.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I use the split bowling design?
Open it in your cutting software, type the name, and size the lettering to fit the clear band between the two halves, which is 17 mm tall when the design is 100 mm tall. Cut everything from one sheet and lift it with transfer tape so the halves keep their spacing, or cut the name from a second colour.
Can I make the bowling pins red and white?
Yes. Use the layered design: it has a dark backing, cream pins, red stripes and a blue ball as separate layers, and you can change each colour. To colour a single pin, cut the pin from white and lay a strip of red vinyl behind the two stripe slots.
Which bowling design works for a league shirt?
The strike with flying pins and the pins exploding from a burst are made for it. The burst design is mirrored, so it centres over a team name on the back. The crossed pins with a ball suit the left chest at about 90 mm.
