Ironwork you can actually cut
The real tower is a lattice of about 18,000 iron parts, and most drawings of it are a mesh of hairlines that no blade can follow. Here the ironwork is reduced to braced panels in three places: the legs, the stage between the two platforms and the shaft above. The bars are 1.6 to 1.8 mm wide when the tower is 100 mm tall, and the open panels between them are large enough to weed.
For vinyl, cut the ironwork tower at 120 mm tall or more. Below that, use the silhouette, which keeps only the arch, or the simple icon, which has nothing thinner than 3 mm.
Making the 3D model
The model is two pieces that cross at right angles. Scale the file so that the slot is as wide as your material is thick, then cut both pieces from the same sheet. Slide the full tower down over the short cross piece until the two slots meet. In card, a dab of glue at the joint keeps it square.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big should I cut the 3D Eiffel tower?
Measure the slot, not the tower. The slot is about 1.7 mm wide when the file is 100 mm wide. For 3 mm plywood or acrylic, scale the file to about 170 mm wide, which makes the tower about 130 mm tall. For 1 mm card, 60 mm wide is enough.
Which Eiffel tower is easiest to weed?
The silhouette, which has one opening, the arch, and the simple icon, which has two. The ironwork tower has about twenty small panels as well, so save it for larger sizes.
Can I add a name or a date?
Use the tower with a name banner. The ribbon across the legs is blank: type your text, fit it inside and slice it out, or cut it from a second colour and lay it on top.
