What the helmet is
The helmet here is the closed bronze kind that Greek and Trojan heroes wear in vase paintings: a single shell that covers the whole head, with almond-shaped eye holes, a bar down over the nose and long cheek pieces. Spartans wore the same helmet, which is why the front view is often called a Spartan helmet. The crest was horsehair set in a holder, running from front to back or, for some officers, across the head from side to side; both are here.
A Trojan is a common school mascot, so these are drawn to work as spirit wear: bold shapes that cut in one piece, face right as mascots usually do, and leave room for a name. Every school’s own Trojan is a different drawing that belongs to that school. These are not any of them, and you are free to use them for yours.
Sizes and colours
For a shirt front, cut a helmet 200 to 250 mm tall in heat transfer vinyl; for a sleeve, a cap or a car window, 70 to 90 mm. The crested helmets have hairs cut as notches 1.5 mm wide at 100 mm, which weed easily at 80 mm and above; below that, use the helmet without a crest. For two colours, use the layered design or cut the plain helmet in a metallic vinyl and the crest in your school colour behind it. The wooden horse has plank slots 1.4 mm wide and wants to be at least 100 mm across.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I use these for my school’s Trojans?
Yes. They are plain drawings of an ancient helmet and are not taken from any school’s or team’s logo. Add your school name and colours in your cutting software. If your school has an official mascot drawing and wants that exact one used, ask the school for it.
What is the difference between a Trojan helmet and a Spartan helmet?
In pictures, very little. Both are shown as the closed bronze helmet with a nose bar, cheek pieces and a horsehair crest. The Trojans of the story are usually drawn with the crest running front to back and the helmet in profile; the Spartan badge is usually the front view. Both are in this set.
Which design is best for a small decal?
The helmet without a crest. It has three bold parts and nothing thinner than the nose bar. The crossed sword and spear are thin by nature and should be cut at 100 mm or more.
