Runners, traces and antlers

A sleigh is a solid tub on slim runners. On the Christmas sleigh at 100 mm long the runners are about 3.5 mm thick and stand on two posts of the same width, so the design is sturdy in vinyl from 60 mm and in card or thin wood from 100 mm. The designs with animals are the delicate ones: the reindeer and the horse are drawn with thick legs and antlers so that they survive being small, but the traces and reins that join them to the sleigh are under 2 mm wide. Cut those designs at 150 mm or more.

Every team stands on a bank of snow with a straight base. The snow joins the hooves and the runners into one piece, which is why nothing falls apart on the mat. Santa in his sleigh is the one for a shadow box: it has no inside cuts at all. The sleigh crossing the moon is a ring 100 mm across with the team welded inside it, and suits an ornament or a window.

Sleigh, sled or bell

The sleigh is the horse-drawn or reindeer-drawn carriage on runners. The sled is the small wooden one a child drags up a hill, drawn here from above with its slats and steering bar, and again with a child riding it down a slope. The single sleigh bell has a cross-shaped slot, as real ones do, and a bow. Use it at the end of a line of lettering or as a gift tag.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which sleigh should I use for a sleigh rides sign?

The one horse open sleigh across the top of the board, at 250 mm or wider, or the Christmas sleigh with curled runners if you want something simpler beside the lettering. Both face right, so set them to the left of the words, or mirror them in your cutting software to face the other way.

Will the reindeer antlers survive cutting?

At the sizes suggested, yes. On the sleigh and reindeer team at 150 mm long each antler is between 2.5 and 3 mm wide. Slow the blade for vinyl, and for card use a fresh blade. If you need it smaller than 120 mm, use Santa in his sleigh as a silhouette instead, which has no antlers.

Can I hang the sleigh bell as an ornament?

Yes. The loop at the top is an open ring with a hole about 7 mm across when the bell is 100 mm tall, which takes a ribbon. For a wooden ornament cut the bell at 70 to 90 mm tall. The slot and the sound hole are cut right through, so the bell looks right from both sides.
