Sizes, materials and the fine parts of a husky
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. What makes a husky a husky is the mask, and in these files the white of the mask is cut away as windows. On the face, each slanted eye stands inside its window and is held only by a flick of eyeliner about 3 mm wide at full size. That bar is the part to respect: in vinyl cut the face at 80 mm or wider, and in 3 mm plywood at 150 mm or more. Mount the cut on white or pale blue card and the mask appears at once.
The side views have long legs, about 6 mm across at the ankle at full size, and a tail that tapers to a point where it curls over the back. The tip rests against the body of the tail, so it does not wave about loose, but burnish it well on vinyl. For wood, the sitting silhouette and the howling husky in its moon ring are the strongest shapes.
Which husky for which job
The face and the layered face are symmetrical and fill a tall rectangle, which suits shirts and tumblers. The howling husky is a ring with the dog welded inside, so it works as a window hanger, a coaster or an ornament. The peeking husky is wide and low for car windows and the rims of mugs.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I give the husky blue eyes?
Use the layered husky face. Its top layer is two small irises: cut them from light blue vinyl or card and place them on the black eyes. For a husky with odd eyes, cut one iris in blue and one in brown.
Will the eyes fall out of the husky face?
No. Each eye is joined to the dark fur at the side of the head by a slanted bar, like a flick of eyeliner, so the face is one piece. Weed the two mask windows slowly from the nose outwards and hold the eye down with a fingertip as you pass it.
Can I use these for a malamute or another sled dog?
Yes. The standing dog, the sitting silhouette and the howling husky suit any spitz with pricked ears and a tail curled over the back, such as a malamute, a Samoyed or an Alaskan husky. The face with its open mask is closest to a Siberian husky.
