Free shark SVG files

Free shark SVG files: a great white with its teeth showing, a hammerhead from above, a spotted whale shark, a cartoon shark for children, and the parts on their own, from a fin in the water to a tooth, a set of jaws and a bitten surfboard.

Teeth, gills and other small cuts

A shark is an easy silhouette and a fiddly mouth. Each file is 100 mm on its longer side, and at that size the teeth of the great white are about 2 mm tall and the gill slits about 1.3 mm wide. They cut cleanly in vinyl at 100 mm and look better still at 150 mm or more. Below 80 mm use the shark silhouette, which has no inside cuts, or the fin in the water.

The fins and the tail end in points. On vinyl, weed from the body outwards so you pull along each fin and not against it. On a laser the tail tips char first, so lower the power or cut at 120 mm and up.

The tooth, the row of teeth and the jaws are mirrored exactly, which makes them simple to centre on a shirt or to fold for a card. The whale shark has dozens of small round spots: cut it from permanent vinyl and lift the spots with a pin, or reverse-weed it and keep the spots instead.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which shark works for a birthday shirt?

The cute cartoon shark is drawn for that: a big head, a big eye and a grin, with nothing thinner than a fin tip. Cut it at 150 to 200 mm in iron-on vinyl and put the age or name under it. The row of shark teeth makes a matching border.

How do I make the shark tooth into a necklace or key ring?

Cut the tooth at 40 to 60 mm from 3 mm plywood, acrylic or faux leather. Add a 3 mm circle in one root lobe in your cutting software before you cut, and it will take a jump ring or a cord.

Can I put the fin behind a name?

Yes. The fin in the water is one piece with a flat run of sea either side. Type the name, set it below the strip of sea and weld or group the two so they stay aligned on the transfer tape.
