Which triangle is which
The equilateral triangle has three equal sides and three 60 degree corners: at 100 mm wide it is 86.6 mm tall, and six of them fit round a point with no gap, which is why it tiles so well for quilts, bunting and geometric wall art. The right triangle here is the 3-4-5 one, 100 mm by 75 mm, and the right-angled outline is half a square with two 45 degree corners. The tall and wide triangles are isosceles: two equal sides and a line of symmetry down the middle.
Sharp corners are the weak point of any triangle. In vinyl a 60 degree point is the first thing to lift, and on a laser it is where the edge scorches. Burnish the corners well, or choose the rounded triangle, whose corners have a 10 mm radius at 100 mm wide. If you resize a file, keep the proportions locked: stretching an equilateral triangle even slightly stops copies of it fitting together.
The Sierpinski and Penrose triangles
The Sierpinski triangle has 40 holes, and the smallest are only about 3.5 mm along a side at 100 mm wide. Cut it at 150 mm or more in vinyl or card so those holes weed cleanly. The Penrose triangle is three loose bars: cut each in a light, a mid and a dark shade of one colour and set them 1.8 mm apart, as in the file, and the figure reads as a solid object that could not exist.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How tall is an equilateral triangle of a given width?
Multiply the width by 0.866. A triangle with 100 mm sides is 86.6 mm tall, one with 4 inch sides is about 3.46 inches tall. The files here keep that ratio as long as you scale them with the proportions locked.
How do I make triangle bunting from these files?
Use the tall isosceles triangle turned point down, or the equilateral triangle for a squatter flag. Make as many copies as you need in your cutting software, place them side by side with their top edges in a line, and cut. Punch two holes near the top corners of each for the string.
Why is the Penrose triangle in three pieces?
The illusion depends on three shades: each bar has to look like a different face of a solid beam. Three separate pieces let you cut each bar from a different colour. If you want it in one colour, use the impossible triangle outline, which is a single joined line drawing.
