Free star SVG files

Free star SVG files, drawn by code so the regular stars are exact, with every point the same length and every angle true: five-pointed stars, outlines, nautical and barn stars, sparkles, starbursts and shooting stars. Download any of them as SVG, PNG or DXF.

27 designs. Free for personal and commercial use, no sign-up. What you can do with them.

Cutting stars cleanly

The tips are what go wrong on a star. A regular five-pointed star has tips of 36 degrees, sharp enough for a blade to lift the vinyl as it turns or for a laser to scorch the wood. Slow the cut, use a fresh blade, and on thin materials choose the rounded star, which has no sharp tips at all. The sparkle, the retro starburst and the shooting star end in finer tips still: those are best in vinyl or card at 80 mm or more.

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The solid stars have no narrow parts and scale down as far as your machine can cut. The outline designs are bands between about 3 and 5.5 mm wide at that size, and each design page lists its narrowest part so you can work out what is left after scaling.

Which star is which

The five-pointed star here is the regular one, with points 72 degrees apart. The nautical star splits each point into a dark half and a light half. A barn star is the same shape folded into facets, shown here by slots. The six-pointed star is two triangles, and the eight-pointed star is the outline of the LeMoyne quilt block. Sparkles and north stars have four main points with hollow or slim sides.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I stop the tips of a star lifting when I cut vinyl?

Use a sharp blade, slow the speed, and weed from the centre out towards each tip so the tip is the last part to move. If the tips still lift at small sizes, switch to the rounded star, which has none.

Can I use a star as a tree topper or a hanging ornament?

Yes. Cut the five-pointed star, the star in a circle or the Christmas star from 3 mm plywood or thick card. The star in a circle and the wreath of stars have gaps to thread a ribbon through. For the others, add a 3 mm hole near the top point in your cutting software.

Which stars come as separate pieces?

Three sets: the scattered stars, the three sparkles, and the moon and stars. Each piece in those files is its own closed shape, so you can ungroup them and cut each in a different colour. Every other star is a single piece.
