Picking a heart for your material
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and each design page gives the narrowest part at that size, which shrinks in step when you scale the file down. The solid hearts (classic, pointed, chubby and pixel) have no thin parts and can be cut as small as your machine allows, down to confetti. The outline, frame and line designs are bands roughly 2 to 6 mm wide at 100 mm: keep those above about 50 mm across in vinyl and above 80 mm in 3 mm plywood so the band stays strong.
A heart has two awkward spots for a blade: the notch between the lobes and the point at the bottom. In vinyl, weed from the notch towards the point so the point is the last part to lift. On a laser, the point of a small heart can scorch, so lower the power or pick the chubby heart, which has a rounded point.
Hearts with loose pieces
The broken heart and the set of three hearts are meant to come apart: each piece is its own closed shape, ready for a different colour. The heart with a cross and the lace heart drop small pieces from their cut-outs, which you can keep for cards and confetti. Everything else holds together as a single piece.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which heart is best for a first vinyl project?
The classic heart or the pointed heart. Each is a single smooth outline with no inner cuts, so there is nothing to weed but the background. The pixel heart is nearly as easy because all its edges are straight.
How do I make a heart outline thicker or thinner?
Start from the solid classic heart and add an inward offset of the width you want in your cutting software, then cut both lines. The ready-made outline here is 5 to 6 mm wide at 100 mm, and the thin pointed outline is just over 2 mm.
Can I cut the broken heart as one piece?
Not as drawn: its two halves do not touch. Slide them together in your software until they overlap and weld them, or cut them as they are and glue both to a backing.
