Libra in the zodiac
Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac and its figure is the scales. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Libra from 23 September to 22 October; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Libra as an air sign, and its ruler is Venus.
The glyph is a level line with a second line above it that rises into a dome. The constellation here is Libra, drawn from the catalogue positions of 6 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Zubeneschamali, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.
Cutting the Libra scales
A balance is made of thin parts, and the chains are the thinnest: about 2 mm wide at the library’s 100 mm size, four of them, each about 36 mm long. That decides the material. In vinyl the scales weed easily at 100 mm and can go down to about 70 mm. In card keep to 100 mm or more. For plywood or acrylic cut the scales at 200 mm or larger, or use the design in the ring of stars, where the frame surrounds the pans.
The standing scales are drawn as one half and mirrored, so the beam is exactly level and the pans match. The Libra glyph is two separate strokes, a level line and a line with a dome above it, so the plain glyph is two loose pieces; on the ring version both strokes run into the ring and hold.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What are the dates for Libra?
By the usual tropical dates, 23 September to 22 October. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.
Which stars are in the Libra constellation design?
Six. Zubeneschamali, the brightest, is the five-pointed star at the top of a triangle whose other corners are Zubenelgenubi and Zubenelakrab. A line drops from Zubenelgenubi to Brachium, and another from Zubenelakrab to the close pair Upsilon and Tau Librae, like the two pans hanging from a beam.
Why do the scales hold a sun and a moon?
The Sun enters Libra at the September equinox, when day and night are the same length everywhere on Earth. A balance with the Sun in one pan and the Moon in the other, hanging level, is a picture of that. The sun, the moon and the stars are all welded to the balance, so the design is one piece.
