Free cotton SVG files

Free cotton SVG files: a single boll, a stem of three, a full wreath, an open wreath tied with a bow, a bouquet, a monogram ring, stems in a jug, a growing plant, a heart and a border. Every boll has its five lobes and its burr of pointed bracts, and every design lifts in one piece.

White cotton in a file of one colour

Cotton is white, and a cut file has only one colour, so a boll filled in solid looks like a dark flower. In these designs the fluff is an open line instead: five round lobes with a crease running in from each notch, and behind them the dry burr and its pointed bracts, which are solid. Cut the design from brown, black or sage, put it on a pale surface, and the fluff reads as white. The jug of stems is the one exception. It is a solid silhouette for shadow boxes and stencils.

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. On the wreaths at that size each boll is about 20 mm across and its lines are about 2 mm wide, which weeds well in vinyl and holds together in card. For a door sign, scale a wreath to 250 mm or more. Below 80 mm, use the single boll or the stem, whose lines are heavier.

Wreaths, rings and bunches

The full wreath repeats every eighth of a turn, so it has no top and can be turned to suit the lettering inside it. The open wreath and the monogram ring are mirrored left to right and have a clear top and bottom. The swag is wide and low, made to sit above or below a line of words. The bouquet and the stem are for stationery, and the layered stem gives you cream fluff as a separate piece to cut from felt or textured card.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make the cotton look white?

Cut the design from a dark colour and mount it on white, cream or pale wood, so the open lobes show the surface behind. For real texture, use the layered stem: cut the fluff layer from white felt or from thick cotton rag paper and glue it over the brown backing.

Which cotton design takes a monogram?

The cotton monogram ring leaves the most room: about three quarters of its width is open. The wreath that is open at the top and the full wreath both frame a single initial or a short name, with a clear space about half as wide as the wreath itself.

Why is cotton used for a second anniversary?

Cotton is the traditional gift for a second wedding anniversary. The heart wreath and the bouquet suit a card or a framed print for it. Cut either from a warm brown and add the couple’s names and the date in your own lettering underneath.
