Lace you can actually cut
Real lace is far too fine for a blade, so here it is reduced to its outline: a row of scallops along a hem with one round eyelet in each. On the ball gown at 100 mm wide the scallops are about 8 mm across and the eyelets nearly 3 mm, which weeds well in vinyl and cuts cleanly in card. The lace gown with long sleeves has smaller scallops on three tiers, so cut that one at 120 mm or more. Folds in the skirts are slots under 2 mm wide that stop short of the hem, and they keep the skirt in one piece.
White on white is the usual problem with a wedding dress. Cut the gown from pearl or ivory card and mount it on kraft, blush or navy so that the folds show, or use the layered version, which adds a backing a little larger than the gown. For glass and mirrors, etching cream through a vinyl stencil of the gown gives a frosted dress that suits a toasting flute.
Shapes of gown
The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a full skirt from the waist. The mermaid gown follows the body to the knee and flares below it. The gown with a train is an A-line with dropped sleeves and a sweep of fabric to one side, and the slip dress on the hanger is the plainest. Choose the one nearest to the real dress when you are making a gift for a bride: it is the detail she will notice first.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which wedding dress suits a dress bag or a hanger tag?
The slip dress on a hanger at 150 to 200 mm tall in iron-on for a garment bag, or at 50 mm in card for a tag tied to the hook. The gown with a train also sits well on a bag because the train fills the width.
Can I use the bride and groom as a cake topper?
Yes. The pair stand on a strip of floor and cut as one solid piece. Cut them 120 to 150 mm wide from 2 mm acrylic or from two layers of glitter card glued back to back, and fix two food-safe picks behind the floor strip.
How do I add names to the wedding dress monogram frame?
The skirt of that gown is an open frame. Set two names, initials or the date inside it in your own lettering, sized so the widest line stays about 5 mm clear of the frame, and cut the lettering in a second colour or weld it to the skirt.
