Sizes, materials and the tuxedo markings
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. A Boston terrier is a black and white dog, and the white is what people know it by, so the front views cut the white out: a blaze that starts narrow at the top of the skull, widens over the muzzle and runs round a black nose, and a strip of white chin under the mouth. Cut these from black vinyl or card and put them on white, and the markings come out the right way round with no layering at all.
The nose stands in the middle of the blaze on a short bar that joins it to the lip, about 5 mm wide at full size on the face. That bar is the part to look after when you weed. Keep the face at 70 mm or wider in vinyl and 120 mm or wider in 3 mm plywood. The side views are sturdier: the legs are slim but straight, the ears end in rounded points and the tail is a short stub, so the standing silhouette cuts well down to about 40 mm.
Which Boston terrier for which job
The standing silhouette is cut level under the feet, so it sits flush on the floor of a shadow box or along the bottom of a sign. The face with a bow tie suits cards, gift bags and shirts for a dog called the American gentleman. The bone under the sitting dog is a blank name plate. The paw print badge is five loose pieces, so use transfer tape in vinyl or a backing sheet in card.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I get the black and white the right way round?
Cut the face, the puppy or the peeking Boston terrier from black and put it on a white or cream surface: the blaze, the chin and the eyes are holes, so they show white. On a dark shirt, use the layered Boston terrier face instead, which has the white as its own layer on top of a black head.
Can I use these for a brindle or seal Boston terrier?
Yes. The markings are the same on all three colours, so only the material changes. Cut the head from dark brown for seal, or from a brindle or wood-grain patterned vinyl for brindle, and keep the blaze, muzzle and chin white.
Is this the same as the French bulldog?
No. The French bulldog has taller, rounder bat ears, a heavier head and a thicker body, and it is in the bulldog set. The Boston terrier here has smaller pointed ears, a square head with a white blaze, a longer leg and a lighter build.
