Free clock SVG files

Free clock SVG files: a wall clock, a blank face with minute marks, a set of hands, an alarm clock with twin bells, a grandfather clock, a cuckoo clock, a pocket watch, a sunburst clock and a mandala face. The faces use marks, not numerals, so there is no lettering to weed.

Making a clock that works

Two designs here are made for real clocks. The blank clock face has a rim, twelve hour marks and forty-eight minute marks and nothing in the middle, so a quartz movement can be fitted through a hole you drill at the centre. The clock stencil is the reverse: a plate with the twelve marks cut out, for painting or burning them on to a board. Scale either one so the marks sit just inside the sweep of the minute hand that came with your movement.

The clock hands set is for display pieces and paper clocks. Bought movements come with their own hands, and the holes in those are shaped to fit the spindle.

Why the hands touch a mark

On the open faced clocks (the analog clock, the alarm clock and the pocket watch) the hands are solid and the face is empty space. Hands in the middle of a hole would fall out, so the minute hand is drawn just long enough to meet the mark it points at. It looks natural at ten past ten, and it means the whole clock lifts in one piece. The join is slim, so cut these at 80 mm or more and handle them by the rim.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Why are there no numbers on the clock faces?

Numerals are small, fiddly to weed and tied to one typeface. Hour marks cut cleanly at any size and suit any style. If you want numbers, add them in your own lettering in your cutting software, just inside the marks.

How big should I cut the blank clock face for a real movement?

Measure the minute hand that came with the movement and make the face a little more than twice that across, so the tip of the hand sweeps just inside the hour marks. Most craft movements suit a face between 200 and 300 mm.

Can I teach the time with these?

Yes. Cut the blank clock face from card, cut the hour and minute hands from the clock hands set in two colours, and join them at the centre with a split pin so they turn.
