Frames, not sunglasses

These are frames with empty lenses, which is what you want when the glasses go on a face you have already drawn: the eyes of the cat, the owl or the teacher still show through. Every pair is level, the same on both sides and has its bridge in the exact middle, so it is quick to centre. For dark lenses, see the sunglasses set, or cut the layered pair here and choose a lens colour.

The wire frames (round, aviator, spectacles and reading glasses) have rims about 2.5 mm thick when the pair is 100 mm wide. In vinyl that is fine down to about 60 mm wide. In card or wood keep them at 100 mm or more, or use the classic, nerd or cat eye frames, which are nearly twice as thick.

Photo props and paper crafts

For a photo booth, cut any frame from stiff card at 140 to 150 mm wide, which is the width of a real pair, and tape a stick or a paper straw behind one hinge. The disguise glasses and the star glasses are the most popular for this. The glints in the classic and nerd frames grow out of the rim, so they stay in place without any backing.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How wide should glasses be on a design?

Measure the face from temple to temple and make the glasses that wide or a little wider, with the bridge on the centre line of the nose. On a real person a pair is about 140 mm across; on a 100 mm cartoon face, 70 to 80 mm looks right.

Do the glints in the lenses fall out?

No. Each glint is a short stroke that starts at the top rim and runs into the lens, so it is part of the frame. Only the classic and nerd glasses have them.

Which frames are best for a small sticker?

The classic, nerd and cat eye frames, whose rims are about 4.5 mm thick at full size. They stay strong at 40 mm wide, where the wire frames would be under 1 mm.
