Pisces in the zodiac

Pisces is the twelfth sign of the zodiac and its figure is the fish. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Pisces from 19 February to 20 March; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Pisces as a water sign, and its ruler is Neptune in modern astrology and Jupiter in the older tradition.

The glyph is two arcs back to back, joined by a bar. The constellation here is Pisces, drawn from the catalogue positions of 17 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Alpherg, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.

Cutting the Pisces fish

The two fish swim in opposite directions and are tied tail to tail by a cord, which is how the constellation has been drawn since antiquity. In the cut file that cord is what makes the pair one piece: it is about 3.5 mm wide at the library’s 100 mm size, with a knot in the middle. In vinyl and card it holds down to about 60 mm. For plywood or acrylic cut the pair at 150 mm or more, or use the fish in a circle, where the fish hold each other and there is no cord at all.

The versions in the crescent moon, the ring of stars and the layered tile add an eye and five scales to each fish. The scales are fine arcs, so weed them last and leave them out by welding them shut if you are cutting small.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What are the dates for Pisces?

By the usual tropical dates, 19 February to 20 March. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.

Why are the two fish tied together?

The star figure shows two fish far apart in the sky, each on the end of a long cord, and the two cords meet at the star Alrescha, whose name comes from the Arabic for the cord. The usual emblem shortens this to two fish and one cord, which is what the silhouette here shows.

Which stars are in the Pisces constellation design?

Seventeen, in a long V. The ring of five on the right is the Circlet, the head of the western fish. From it a chain runs east to Alrescha at the point of the V on the left, and a second chain climbs from there to a small triangle at the top, the northern fish. Alpherg, on that second chain, is the brightest and is the five-pointed star.
