What makes a feather cut well
A feather has three thin places: the quill at the bottom, the bars left between splits, and the line along the shaft. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and at that size the quill is about 2 to 3 mm wide. In vinyl and card that is safe down to roughly 60 mm long. For leather, felt and wood, stay at 80 mm or more, or choose the feather silhouette, which has no inside cuts.
On the designs with a shaft line, the two halves of the vane are joined at the tip and at the base only. That is plenty for vinyl on transfer tape and for card that will be glued down, but handle a loose cut-out by the quill rather than by one side.
Feather earrings and leather
The earring pair is drawn for faux leather: each feather has a 3 mm hole for the hook when cut 100 mm long, and splits that reach about halfway to the shaft so the edges can be fringed with your fingers. Cut them at 60 to 75 mm long for a typical drop earring; the hole is then about 2 mm, which still takes a standard jump ring.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Are the birds part of the feather?
No. In the feather with birds, the feather is one piece and each bird that has left it is its own small piece. Cut them from vinyl and move everything together with transfer tape so the birds keep their places.
Which feather is best for a pen plotter or foil quill?
The line feather with barbs. It is made of single strokes of even width with no filled areas, so a pen or a foil tip can trace it without leaving gaps.
Can I straighten a curved feather?
Not in cutting software, but you can pick one that is already straight: the boho feather and the banded feather both have a straight shaft and are the same on both sides.
