How a taco holds together
A taco is a pile of loose things in a shell, which is awkward for a cutting machine. In these files the cheese, tomato, lettuce and shell overlap like the real thing, and each is set off from the part behind it by a cut line about 2 mm wide. Every line stops about 3 mm short of the outside edge, and those uncut ends are what keep the taco in one piece. Weed the lines out with a hook and leave the ends alone.
The speckles on the shell are holes about 3 mm across when the taco is 100 mm wide, and the strands of cheese are about 4 mm wide. Both are the first things to suffer at small sizes. Below about 50 mm wide, use the taco silhouette or the simple taco with lettuce, which has a plain shell and no strands.
Tacos for parties and names
The split taco leaves a band across the shell for a name, and the monogram taco has a round window for an initial. The taco in a sombrero and the zigzag taco suit party invitations and banners. For a taco bar sign, cut the row of three across the top and letter underneath. The heartbeat line is more than twice as wide as it is tall, so it fits the chest of a shirt or the side of a mug.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I cut the taco in several colours?
Yes. The layered taco has the cheese, tomato, lettuce and shell as separate layers, each in its own colour. Cut them from card or vinyl and stack them in the order listed, cheese layer first, as that layer is also the backing for the rest.
Which taco is easiest to weed?
The taco silhouette has nothing inside to weed. Next is the simple taco with lettuce, which has two curved lines and nothing else. The classic taco has the most small pieces to lift out, because of the speckles on its shell.
How big should I cut a taco for a shirt?
About 200 mm wide for an adult shirt and 120 mm for a child. At those sizes every cut line is over 2 mm wide, which heat transfer vinyl handles easily. Press the tips of the cheese strands well, as they are the parts most likely to lift.
