Flowers and nature

Free dandelion SVG files

Free dandelion SVG files drawn by code: seed heads on their stems, seeds blowing away and turning into birds or hearts, the yellow flower with its toothed leaves, and a stencil. Every hair is a clean welded shape that tapers to a point.

Fine hairs and how small you can cut them

A dandelion seed head is nearly all thin lines, which makes it one of the harder plants to cut. Here every spoke is about 2 mm wide when the file is 100 mm tall, and each hair starts at that width and narrows to a point. In vinyl that weeds well at 100 mm and can go down to about 70 mm. In card, keep seed heads at 100 mm or more, and for wood or acrylic choose the silhouette or the simple dandelion, which have solid middles.

When you weed a seed head, pull from the stem towards the head and then outwards along the spokes, so each fan of hairs lifts from its base and not from its tips.

Designs with loose seeds

The blowing designs are several pieces: the plant is one, and every drifting seed, bird or heart is its own piece. On vinyl, leave them on the backing and move the whole design with transfer tape so the spacing stays as drawn. In paper or wood, glue the plant down first and then place the seeds by eye; they do not need to match the file exactly to look right.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Can I add my own words under the blowing dandelion?

Yes. The seeds drift up and to the right, which leaves the lower right corner empty. Put a short line of lettering there in your cutting software, or run it along the bottom beside the stem.

Which dandelion is best for a car window decal?

The dandelion with seeds blowing away or the seeds turning into birds, cut in white vinyl at 120 mm or more. The spokes and stalks are then over 2 mm wide, which is enough to survive weather and washing.

How do I use the dandelion stencil?

Cut the plate from stencil film or thin card and fix it flat with low-tack spray or tape. Dab paint on with a nearly dry sponge. The stem is in two parts and the seeds are separate openings so that the plate does not fall apart.
