Silhouettes that read at a glance
A ninja is known by very little: dark loose clothes, a hood, two headband tails and a pose. The figures here are solid silhouettes with no face at all, posed mid kick, mid leap or low to the ground, so the outline does the work. Limbs are drawn thick, between 4 and 10 mm across when the figure is 100 mm tall, which means every figure cuts cleanly in vinyl and card and holds together in thin wood. The slim parts are the swords and the tips of the headband tails, at 2 to 3 mm.
The faces are a different drawing. The hood is solid, the eye slit is a window, and the two eyes hang from the upper edge of the slit so that they stay attached. Put a skin tone or white behind the window and the eyes look out of it. The layered face gives you the hood, the red headband, the skin and the eyes as separate pieces.
Parties, clubs and bedroom doors
For a ninja birthday, the little ninja and the birthday ninja go on invitations and cake toppers at 60 to 80 mm, and the throwing stars make table scatter cut from silver card at 40 mm. Martial arts clubs tend to use the flying kick or the ninja with a sword raised across the back of a shirt. The name sign has a blank panel for a child’s name on a bedroom door, and the rooftop silhouette has a level base for a shadow box. None of these is a character from a film, a show, a comic or a game.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Are these ninjas from a film, a cartoon or a game?
No. They are generic figures drawn for this library: plain dark clothes, a hood and a headband, with no emblem, no colour scheme and no name. The headband plate is left blank on purpose. That makes them safe to use on things you sell.
How do I make the eyes show on the ninja face?
The eye slit is cut out, and the eyes are part of the hood, joined along the top of the slit. Stick the face on a white or skin coloured surface, or put a strip of that colour behind the slit, and the eyes appear dark on light. The glint in each eye is a small hole.
Which design is best for throwing star decorations?
The four-pointed ninja star is the quickest to cut and the strongest in card. The six-bladed shuriken looks more dangerous but has finer tips, so keep it at 50 mm or more. Cut both from silver, grey or mirror card and scatter them on a party table.
