A wand is mostly stick
The head of a wand is easy to cut and the stick is where care is needed. In these files the sticks are about 4.5 mm wide at 100 mm, the conjuror’s wand about 7 mm, and the wizard’s wand thins from 7 mm at the handle to under 3 mm at its tip. Vinyl and iron-on manage those at half size. Ribbons are about 4 mm wide and wave away from the stick, so weed them from the star outwards and they will not stretch.
To make a wand a child can hold, cut the star wand silhouette twice from stiff card or 3 mm plywood at 250 to 300 mm tall, and glue the two together with a wooden skewer or a dowel between them. At that size the stick of the file is about 12 mm wide, which hides the dowel. Add real ribbon under the star.
Parties, costumes and magic shows
The star, heart, flower and moon wands suit fairy and princess parties: put one on each invitation and a larger one on the door. The conjuror’s wand, the trail of stars and the hat with a wand are for magic shows and birthday entertainers. The starburst ring has an open middle for an initial or an age, which makes it a quick cake topper when cut from glitter card and taped to a skewer.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make a real wand from one of these files?
Use the star wand silhouette. Scale it to 250 or 300 mm tall, cut two from stiff card, and sandwich a wooden skewer between them with glue, running from the middle of the star to the bottom of the stick. Tie two lengths of ribbon under the star.
Are the sparkles of the magic wand joined to it?
No. The three sparkles and two dots are loose pieces, placed just beyond the tip. In vinyl, lift the wand and its sparkles together with one piece of transfer tape to keep the spacing. If you need one piece, use the wand with a trail of stars, where a sweep of magic ties every star to the wand.
Is the wizard wand from a film?
No. It is our own wand: a turned handle with a pommel and two rings, and a plain wavering shaft. It is not a copy of the wand of any character, so you are free to give it to a wizard of your own.
