Three chairs called a beach chair
People mean three different things by a beach chair, so the set has all three. The deckchair is the folding wooden frame with a canvas sling, drawn from the side because that is the view that shows how it works: two frames crossed like scissors, a prop at the back and the canvas hanging between the top bar and the front bar. The folding chair is the low aluminium one with striped webbing, drawn from the front so the stripes show. The Adirondack is the wide wooden chair with a fan back and flat arms.
The deckchair is all thin members, each about 4 mm wide when the design is 100 mm across, so it cuts cleanly in vinyl and card from about 80 mm but wants 150 mm or more in wood. The Adirondack from the front is the sturdy one: its slats are about 8 mm wide with gaps a little under 2 mm between them.
Stripes and sand
The stripes on the folding chair are openings, three in the back and three in the seat, so one cut laid over red, blue or yellow card gives a striped chair. The side views all stand on a strip of sand that is flat underneath, which lets you stand them in a shadow box or run them along the bottom of a card. There is no umbrella in this set: add one from the umbrella set if you want shade.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which beach chair takes a name?
The beach chair with a blank back. The clear panel is about 44 mm wide and 22 mm tall below the scalloped top when the chair is 100 mm wide, enough for a first name or a pair of initials. Cut the name out of the panel or lay it on in a second colour.
What is an Adirondack chair?
A low outdoor chair made of flat boards, with a tall back of fanned slats, a seat that slopes down towards the back and arms wide enough to stand a drink on. It began in the Adirondack mountains of New York and is now as common on beaches and docks as in gardens.
Can I cut the deckchair without the sand?
Yes. Subtract a rectangle over the strip of sand in your cutting software. The chair is one piece on its own, because its two frames, the prop and the canvas all join. The towel, the hat and the bag stay attached to the chair or stand apart, so delete any that are left loose.
