Long, low and thin at the ends
A kayak is about ten times as long as it is deep, so at any size the hull is a thin shape with two fine points. Here the hull is about 15 mm deep when the kayak is 100 mm long, and the paddle shaft is about 3 mm thick. That cuts well in vinyl from 80 mm long. For car windows, 150 to 200 mm is the usual size and every design here holds together easily at that length.
The stripe along the hull, the deck lines and the ripples in the water are cut lines about 1.5 mm wide that stop short of the edges. On the designs with water, the boat sits a little way into the strip of water so the join is as wide as the hull, and the underside of the water is one straight line.
Kayak or canoe
A kayak has a closed deck with a cockpit and is driven with a double-bladed paddle. A canoe is open, with upturned ends, and is paddled with a single blade that has a grip at the top. Both are here: use the kayak designs for sea and river trips, and the canoe, the canoe paddle and the crossed paddles for lake houses, summer camps and cabin signs.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which kayak works best as a car decal?
The kayak with a paddle or the heartbeat kayak, cut at 150 to 200 mm long in outdoor vinyl. Both are long and low, which suits the bottom edge of a rear window. The kayak silhouette on the water is the easiest to weed.
Can I put a name between the crossed paddles?
Yes. Cut the crossed canoe paddles and set a line of lettering under the cross, or use the kayak paddle monogram frame, which has a clear ring in the middle about 60 mm across when the design is 100 mm wide.
Will the paddle shafts survive weeding?
They are about 3 mm thick when the design is 100 mm long. Weed away from the shaft, not along it, and lift the blades first. Below about 70 mm long, pick the kayak silhouette on the water, where the shaft is backed by the paddler.
