Drawing a weld that welders recognise
People who weld judge a bead by its ripples: even, overlapping crescents, often called a stack of dimes. Three designs here use that pattern: the heart with a seam down the middle, the straight bead and the monogram ring. The ripples are cut-outs about 2 mm wide when the design is 100 mm across, spaced about 6.5 mm apart, so they weed cleanly in vinyl from about 70 mm and engrave well on steel or acrylic at any size.
The helmet has a real window: the dark lens is a hole, so on a truck window or a tumbler the colour behind it shows through. For a tinted lens, use the layered helmet and cut the lens from green, blue or mirror vinyl.
Sparks, rods and thin parts
The welding rod on the electrode holder and the contact tip of the torch are the thinnest parts in the set, only 2 to 3 mm wide at 100 mm, and each carries a burst of sparks at its end. In vinyl keep those two designs at 80 mm or more and peel from the grip towards the sparks. In wood, choose the helmet, the heart or the cylinders, which have no long thin parts.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I add a name or a decal to the welder helmet?
Yes. The crown above the window and the chin below it are plain. Put a name across the crown in a bold face, or flames, stripes or a flag on the cheeks, cut from a second colour and laid on top, as real helmet decals are.
What is the difference between the torch and the electrode holder?
The torch with the curved neck is for wire-feed welding, where the wire comes out through the nozzle. The electrode holder grips a separate rod and is used for stick welding. Pick the one that matches the work your welder does.
How big is the opening in the welder monogram frame?
About 57 mm across when the design is 100 mm tall. The welded ring is broad, so keep lettering inside the opening and choose a heavy face that stands up to it.
