Gemini in the zodiac

Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac and its figure is the twins. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Gemini from 21 May to 20 June; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Gemini as an air sign, and its ruler is Mercury.

The glyph is two pillars joined by a curved bar at the top and another at the foot. The constellation here is Gemini, drawn from the catalogue positions of 16 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Pollux, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.

Cutting the Gemini twins

Both twin designs are drawn as one half and mirrored, so the two figures match exactly and the file centres on its own middle line. The twins are joined only where their hands meet, a neck about 8 mm wide at the library’s 100 mm size, and each raised arm is a little over 4 mm wide below its star. In vinyl and card that holds at any size down to 60 mm; in plywood keep the twins at 120 mm or more so the arms and the joined hands are strong.

The Gemini glyph has a closed window between its two pillars. When the glyph is cut as a hole, on the badge and the celestial card, a bridge across each pillar keeps that middle panel in place.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What are the dates for Gemini?

By the usual tropical dates, 21 May to 20 June. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.

Which stars are in the Gemini constellation design?

Sixteen. Castor and Pollux are the two heads at the top left; Pollux is slightly the brighter of the two and is drawn as the five-pointed star. Two chains of stars run from them down to the feet: Castor’s side ends at Tejat and Propus, and Pollux’s side at Alhena and Alzirr.

Can I separate the twins to use one figure alone?

Yes. Cut straight down the centre line through the joined hands, or in your cutting software slice the file with a thin rectangle at its middle. Each half is a complete figure holding a star, and because the file is mirrored the two halves are true opposites.
