Cutting the spines
The spines are what make a hedgehog, and in these files they are a row of points along the back, each about 6 mm high and 6 mm apart at 100 mm. They are true points with wide bases, so nothing is thinner than the material can stand, and they cut cleanly in vinyl, card and felt. In 3 mm plywood the tips will char a little on a laser, which suits the animal.
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The hedgehog with spines also has short quills cut into its back; those slots are about 2.5 mm wide, so below 60 mm use the hedgehog silhouette, which keeps the spiny edge and drops everything inside but the eye. The mandala hedgehog has the smallest windows and wants cutting at full size or larger.
Autumn, gardens and nurseries
Hedgehogs belong to autumn leaves, apples and toadstools, so the hedgehog carrying an apple and the hedgehog under a toadstool are drawn for harvest cards, bonfire night invitations and signs for a wildlife corner. The cartoon hedgehog, the hedgehog face and the mother with two hoglets are for younger children: cut them from brown card and put cream behind the face.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make the face a different colour from the spines?
Cut the hedgehog once in dark brown, cut it again in cream or tan, and keep only the face from the second cut: the zigzag line shows where to trim. Glue the pale face over the dark one. On the cartoon hedgehog the zigzag also marks out the tummy.
Is this a hedgehog or a porcupine?
A hedgehog: small, round, with short spines and a pointed face. A porcupine is much larger with long quills that hang down its back. In a small single-colour cut the two look alike, and the hedgehog silhouette is often used for both.
Which hedgehog works best on fabric?
The hedgehog silhouette and the hedgehog curled in a ball have the fewest inside cuts, so they press well in iron-on and can be cut from felt for an applique. Leave the mandala hedgehog for card, vinyl or thin wood.
