Horns, lashes and manes: what to check before you cut

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side at its own size. The unicorn face designs are made of loose pieces: a horn, two ears and two closed eyes. Keep them on one sheet of transfer tape so they stay in place. The lashes are the fine part, about 2.5 mm thick at the lid and half that at the tip when the face is 100 mm tall, so cut faces at 100 mm or more in vinyl and at 150 mm or more in glitter iron-on, which is thicker.

The horn is a cone with slanted slits between its turns. The slits stop short of the edges, so the horn stays in one piece and the bulges along its sides give the twist. For a gold horn on a white face, cut the horn from gold and the rest from black or pink: in your cutting software, move each piece to the mat for its colour.

The heads in profile have a mane of separate locks that taper to points. Weed from the neck outwards so you pull along each lock. In wood or acrylic the prancing silhouette is the delicate one, because of its legs: cut it at 150 mm or more.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
