Wheels that stay in one piece
A skate wheel is a tyre round a hub, and a hub drawn as a full ring would drop out as soon as it was cut. On these skates the ring between tyre and hub is cut as two halves with a bridge at the top and the bottom, so each wheel stays whole and the skate lifts off the mat in one piece. When the retro skate is 100 mm tall, the wheels are about 23 mm across and the lace bars are just under 2 mm wide.
For vinyl and iron-on, cut the detailed skates at 80 mm tall or more so that the laces weed without tearing. Smaller than that, use the silhouette, which has no inside cuts at all, or the simple skate for children. In card or wood, the toe stop and the bow are the parts that snap first, so support them when you lift the piece off the mat.
Quad, derby, inline and ice
The tall boot on four wheels is the classic rink skate, and it is the one in most of these designs. The roller derby skate has a low-cut boot, which players wear for speed and a free ankle. The inline skate has its four wheels in a single row and a brake at the heel. The pair of ice skates is here for winter projects: the same laced boot, with a blade and a toe pick where the wheels would be.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Why does a quad roller skate show only two wheels?
A quad skate has four wheels in two pairs, one pair under the ball of the foot and one under the heel. Seen from the side, the far wheel of each pair sits exactly behind the near one, so a profile shows two. The inline skate is the one with four wheels in a row.
Which roller skate suits a skate party invitation?
The retro roller skate with stripes or the skate with a heart, at 40 to 60 mm tall in card. Put the disco ball beside it with silver or holographic card behind the tiles, and use the pair of roller skates across the top of a banner or a welcome sign.
Are the two ice skates joined together?
No. They are separate pieces with a slim gap where the front skate covers the back one, so that each boot keeps its own outline. In vinyl, lift both at once with transfer tape. In card, glue them to a backing, or cut just one of them.
