Sagittarius in the zodiac
Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac and its figure is the archer. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Sagittarius from 22 November to 21 December; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Sagittarius as a fire sign, and its ruler is Jupiter.
The glyph is an arrow pointing up and to the right with a bar across its shaft. The constellation here is Sagittarius, drawn from the catalogue positions of 13 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Kaus Australis, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.
Cutting the Sagittarius archer
The centaur is a sturdy shape carrying three fine things: the bow, the bowstring and the arrow. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and at that size the string is 2 mm wide and the arrow a little over 2 mm, with the bow tapering to the same at its tips. In vinyl the archer weeds well at 100 mm; pull the small windows between bow and string first. In card keep to 100 mm or more, and for plywood or acrylic cut at 180 mm or larger so the string is a good 3.5 mm.
The Sagittarius glyph is the simplest of the twelve to cut: three straight strokes in one piece, with no enclosed window. It is also the most often mistaken for a plain arrow, so pair it with the constellation or the archer when the sign needs to be clear.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What are the dates for Sagittarius?
By the usual tropical dates, 22 November to 21 December. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.
Which stars are in the Sagittarius constellation design?
Thirteen. Eight of them make the Teapot, the part of the constellation most people recognise: Kaus Australis, the brightest and the five-pointed star here, with Kaus Media and Kaus Borealis in the bow, Alnasl at the spout, and Nunki, Ascella, Phi and Tau Sagittarii in the handle and body. The rest reach north to the head and south to Eta.
Which way does the archer aim?
Up and to the right, the same way as the arrow in the glyph. On the silhouette the arrow rises 20 degrees above the level. Flip the file in your cutting software if you need the archer to face left, for the right-hand side of a pair or the back window of a car.
