Rind, pale band and seeds

A slice of watermelon has three colours, and a one-colour file has to suggest them with cuts. On these slices a line about 2.4 mm wide follows the curve of the rind and stops a few millimetres short of each side, so the rind is marked off but never falls away. The seeds are teardrop holes nearly 10 mm long when the slice is 100 mm tall, large enough to weed easily at half that size.

For a slice in real colours, cut the classic slice twice, once in green and once in pink or red, and trim the red one along its rind line before sticking it on top of the green. The layered slice gives you each colour as its own layer with the seeds as a fourth.

Loose seeds

Two designs are nothing but seeds. Cut them from black permanent vinyl and stick them on anything pink or red, from a tumbler to a child’s shirt, and the object becomes the watermelon. Each seed is a separate piece, so lift the whole set with transfer tape to keep the spacing, or place them one at a time for a looser look.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a watermelon shirt with the seeds?

Cut the watermelon seed pattern or the scattered seeds from black heat transfer vinyl, about 150 mm wide for a child and 250 mm for an adult. Press them on a pink or red shirt. For a full slice, add a strip of green along the hem.

Will the rind fall off when I cut the slice?

No. The line between rind and flesh stops short of both edges of the slice, leaving two bridges about 4 mm wide. They hold the rind to the rest of the slice, so it lifts off the mat as one piece.

Which design works as a summer monogram?

The watermelon monogram frame, a round slice with an open middle for one to three initials. The split slice is the one for a name: it leaves a band about 20 mm tall across a 100 mm slice.
