How the straps hold the tube
A strap is the strip of card between two slits. Flat, it is only as long as the slits; to pass over a tube it has to arch, and the arch over a 16 mm tube is 25 mm long. So the slits here are 27 mm long at the cut size in each note: long enough for the strap to rise over the tube, short enough to grip it. Each card has two straps 32 mm apart, and a 67 mm tube stands a little above the top one and below the bottom one.
That fit depends on cutting at the stated size. The files open at 100 mm on their longer side, so scale each to its cut size: the tag to 112 mm tall, the heart to 104 mm wide. Cut much smaller, the slits are too short and the card buckles; cut larger, the tube slides out. A slimmer or fatter tube needs the file scaled by its width divided by 16.
Card and making up
Card of 200 to 250 gsm is right for the strap cards: thinner card tears at the ends of the slits and thicker card will not arch. Lift both straps with a fingertip before you slide the tube in, top strap first. Several cards cut from one A4 or Letter sheet, which makes these quick favours for a party, a wedding or a class.
The box and the stand each have one glued seam. The box is 18 mm square inside, 2 mm more than the tube, and tucks shut at both ends. The stand is a four-sided tube of card: glue its tab, set it on its side with the holes on top, and the lip balms stand in it. The pocket card is glued by the two tabs of its band, 17 mm apart on the card, one each side of the floor.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What size lip balm fits these holders?
The standard stick: 16 mm across and 67 mm long with its cap on, which is the size most brands sell. Round and egg-shaped pots do not fit. Measure yours across; if it is not 16 mm, scale the file by its width divided by 16.
Why does my card buckle when the tube is in?
The straps are too short for the tube, which means the file was cut too small or the tube is fatter than 16 mm. At the right size each slit is 27 mm long. Check that length in your cutting software before you cut.
How many holders fit on one sheet?
The tag is 112 by 56 mm, so six fit on a sheet of A4 or Letter card in two rows of three. The heart is 104 mm wide and four fit. The box and the stand each take about a quarter of a sheet.
