Horses, poles and thin legs
A carousel is a roof and a platform joined by a few thin poles, with a horse on each pole. The poles are close to 3 mm wide when the carousel is 100 mm tall and the legs of the small horses are a little under that, so the carousel with three horses needs to be cut at 100 mm or more in vinyl and 150 mm or more in card. The carousel horse on a pole is the same horse drawn large, with a saddle line, a girth and an eye cut into it, and it holds together well from about 60 mm tall.
The stripes on the roof and the bulbs on the valance are openings. Glue the cut over cream or gold card and the roof shows its stripes and the bulbs shine, with no second cut needed. The layered carousel has those parts on separate layers if you would rather build it up in colours.
Fairground rides for parties and paper scenes
Carousels are cut for first birthdays, baby showers, nursery walls and cake toppers. The monogram frame leaves the space under the roof clear for a name or an age. The Ferris wheel, the roller coaster and the chair swing ride suit fair posters and summer scrapbooks. Each ride stands on a platform or a strip of ground with a straight underside, so several can be stood side by side as the layers of a paper fairground or a shadow box.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which carousel is best for a cake topper?
The carousel silhouette or the simple carousel with one horse. Both have thick poles and a solid platform to glue a pick to. Cut them from stiff glitter card at 120 to 150 mm tall and stick two copies back to back over the pick.
Will the Ferris wheel spokes hold?
The wheel with twelve gondolas has spokes about 2.5 mm wide when it is 100 mm tall, joined at the hub, at an inner rim and at the outer rim. In card that is sturdy from 120 mm. The Ferris wheel silhouette has eight thicker spokes and works smaller.
Can I add a name to the carousel?
Use the carousel monogram frame. Set the name in the open space between the two poles in your cutting software, make it wide enough to touch both poles or the platform, and weld it to the frame so it cuts as one piece.
