The digits, and how far they go

Pi is the distance round a circle divided by the distance across it, and its decimal places never end or settle into a repeating pattern. These files use the first fifty: 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510. The ring shows the first 35 and closes with three dots, the spiral shows all fifty, and the row under 3.14 carries places three to fourteen, 159265358979. The digits are held once in the code and each design reads them from there, so a numeral cannot be mistyped in one file and right in another.

Pi Day is 14 March because the date is written 3/14 in the United States. Some schools mark 1:59 in the afternoon as well, for the next three digits.

Cutting numerals this small

The ring and the spiral are made of loose numerals about 7 to 8 mm tall when the file is 100 mm wide, with strokes of about 1.4 mm. That is too fine to weed in vinyl at that size, so cut them at 250 mm or more for a shirt or a classroom door, where each numeral is around 19 mm tall, and lift the whole ring with one sheet of transfer tape. For a small make, such as a badge or a card, use the sign on its own, the heart or the pie: each is a single piece with nothing narrow.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How many digits of pi are on these designs?

The ring has 3 and the first 35 decimal places. The spiral has all fifty that the set holds, ending in 37510. The numerals design shows 3.14 and the next twelve places. None of them rounds the last digit: each stops where it stops and the true digits carry on.

Which pi sign should I use for a stencil?

The block form with flat feet. It has straight edges, no thin flick and no enclosed part, so it cuts cleanly from stencil film and stands up in wood. The brush-drawn sign is better for vinyl, where its curves are no trouble.

Can I cut the pie with the pi sign from real pastry?

Yes, as a template. Cut the pie design from card at the width of your dish, lay it on the rolled lid and cut round the sign with a sharp knife. The sign is one closed window, so the lid stays whole and the steam has its vent.
