Borders that join without a seam
The grass border, the silhouette, the tall grass and the grass with flowers all stand on a straight base that runs the full 100 mm width and is the same height at both ends. Put copies side by side so the bases overlap by a millimetre, weld them, and the join vanishes among the blades. For a long wall border, mirror every second copy so the pattern of tall and short blades does not repeat too obviously.
Blades end in sharp points, which is what makes them look like grass and also what catches when you weed. Peel the waste upwards, from the base towards the tips, and the points stay down.
Choosing a grass for the material
Vinyl takes every design here at 100 mm wide and above. For card and felt, the simple cartoon grass and the grass border have the broadest blades. For wood and acrylic on a laser, the tips of long blades scorch and snap easily, so use the short border or the hill, or scale the tall grass up to 200 mm or more so the blades are thicker where they taper.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make a grass border as long as a wall?
Repeat the grass border end to end, overlapping the level bases slightly, and weld. At 100 mm a copy, ten copies cover a metre. Scale the file first if you want taller grass, then repeat it.
Which grass sits best under an animal or a house?
The bunch of grass and the three tufts are made for that: place one so its root overlaps the feet or the wall and weld. For a whole scene, stand everything on the grass hill or the grass silhouette instead.
What is the curved grass for?
It fits the bottom of a circle. The base follows the edge of a disc 100 mm across, so on a round sign of any size you can scale the file to the same width as the sign and the grass lines up with the rim.
