Mustache or moustache

Both spellings are right: mustache in American English, moustache in British. The styles have names too. A handlebar curls up at the ends; an imperial curls further and bigger; a chevron is thick and plain; a walrus droops over the mouth; an English is long, slim and straight; a pencil is a thin line; and a horseshoe runs down both sides of the mouth to the jaw. All of them are here, drawn from a single centre line and mirrored, so the left side always matches the right.

The beards are drawn without a face. They have a moustache line, an opening for the mouth and sideburns, so they sit under a nose in a photograph, on a pumpkin or on a gnome.

Props, shirts and baby showers

For a photo prop, cut a moustache 110 to 130 mm wide from stiff card or 3 mm wood, which is a little wider than a real mouth so it shows up in pictures. The design on a stick has the stick built in. For a little man baby shower, the moustache and bow tie set is the usual pairing. The fine tips of the upturned and English styles are finished with a small round, so they do not tear, but press them down well in vinyl.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
