Candles and flames

The delicate part of a birthday cake is the candle. Each flame is joined to its candle by a short wick, and the candle has two stripes cut into it. The wick and the edges of the candle beside the stripes are the narrowest parts of the design, between 2 and 3 mm wide when the cake is 100 mm tall. In vinyl and card it is fine at 60 mm and above. On a laser, cut at 100 mm or more, or choose the three-tier cake with a star or the cake with hearts, which have no wicks at all.

The stripes on the candles are short slanted slots that stop inside the edge of the candle, so the candle cannot fall into pieces. On the silhouette and the two-tier cake the candles are plain, because five slim candles leave no room for stripes.

Icing and names

The icing is set off from the sponge by a cut line a little over 2 mm wide that follows every drip and stops short of the sides of the cake. For pink icing on a brown cake, cut the design twice and trim along that line. To add a name, use the split cake, which has a clear band across the middle, or the monogram cake, whose whole side is an open panel.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I add an age to the cake?

Use the monogram cake and put the number in the open panel, or cut a number from a second colour and lay it on the side of the classic cake. For a cake topper, stand the loose candles on top of a large cut number.

Which cake is best for a card front?

The classic cake with three candles or the cake on a stand, cut at 80 to 100 mm from coloured card. Glue a scrap of yellow behind the flames, or cut the layered cake for separate icing, candles and flames.

Can I use these on a real cake?

As a paper topper, yes: cut the silhouette from card and tape it to a food-safe pick so only the pick touches the cake. Do not put vinyl or printed card in contact with food.
