Boards that hold together
The grid is four bars that cross, so as a vinyl decal or a wooden overlay it is one piece and needs nothing else. A board cut as a plate is harder: two lines each way would cut the middle square clean out. The plate, the travel board and the heart board get round that by cutting each line in three lengths that stop about 3 mm short of the crossings. The nine squares stay joined at their corners, and the slots still read as the grid.
For a set to play with, cut the plate at 150 mm from 3 mm plywood and the X and O pieces at 110 mm wide, which makes each piece about 30 mm: big enough for small hands and too big to swallow. The travel board is drawn with round sockets so that the tokens stay put in a car or a tent.
Games that could happen
X moves first and the players take turns, so a board can never show more Os than Xs, nor two more Xs than Os. A game stops at the first line of three, so the winner made the last move. The finished games here keep to that: four Xs to three Os where X wins, three of each where O wins, and five to four in the drawn game. The Valentine pattern with a heart in the middle is decoration and says so.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big should a tic tac toe board be?
For a table game, 150 mm square with squares of about 45 mm suits pieces 30 mm across. For a travel game in a small bag, 100 to 130 mm with tokens of about 20 mm. For a garden game with bean bags, scale the grid to 600 mm or more and cut each bar from wide tape or paint through a stencil.
How many X and O pieces does a game need?
Five of one and four of the other at most, because there are nine squares and the first player gets the odd one. A set with five of each lets either player go first, which is why the piece sets here have ten.
Can I cut the board and pieces from felt?
Yes. Use the grid with round ends, sewn or glued to a felt square, and the loose pieces cut from two layers of stiffened felt. Avoid the slotted plate for felt: slots 2.4 mm wide close up in soft material.
