Which wrench is which

In Britain most of these are spanners, and a wrench is the adjustable kind. In America all of them are wrenches. The combination wrench has an open jaw at one end and a ring at the other. The double open-ended spanner has a jaw at each end in two sizes. The adjustable wrench has one moving jaw driven by a worm, and the pipe wrench has toothed jaws that bite on round pipe, which is why it belongs to plumbers.

For a mechanic, pick the combination wrench, the crossed pair, the ratchet or the gear emblem. For a plumber, the pipe wrench. The four-way wheel wrench suits a tyre fitter or anyone who has changed a wheel at the roadside.

Cutting notes

Wrenches are long and narrow, but they are solid steel bars, so they cut well in every material. The handle of the combination wrench is about 8 mm wide when the wrench is 100 mm long, and the sunk panel along it is a slot a little over 2 mm wide. On a truck window or a toolbox, cut any single wrench at 150 mm or more so the jaw and the ring read from a distance. The set of five is loose pieces: keep it on transfer tape to hold the spacing.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Why is there no size marked on the wrenches?

Sizes are numerals, and these files carry no lettering or numerals at all, so they suit any country and any trade. If you want a size on the handle, add it in your cutting software over the sunk panel, which is the place a real wrench has it stamped.

Can I add a name between the two wrenches of the monogram frame?

Yes. The ring between them has an opening about 51 mm across when the design is 100 mm tall. Set initials or a short name inside it, cut from a second colour or welded to the ring so it lifts as one piece.

Which wrench design works on a small sticker?

The double open-ended wrench and the four-way wheel wrench. Both are bold shapes with few inside cuts and stay clear at 40 mm. The pipe wrench has small teeth and the ratchet has fine grip rings, so keep those at 80 mm or more.
