Doors with their braces left in

What makes a barn a barn is the cross on its doors. On a cut file that cross has to be part of the barn or it falls out, so here each door is cut as four triangles and the brace is the strip left standing between them. The braces are about 2.3 mm wide when the barn is 100 mm tall, which holds in vinyl and card from about 70 mm and in wood from about 150 mm. The simple barn has one wide door with a brace over 3 mm wide.

Stuck on something light, the triangles show pale and the barn dark, like a real barn with white trim seen the other way round. For the true colours, red walls with white braces, use the red barn in five colours, which has the trim as its own layer.

Farm signs and barn quilts

The barn monogram frame is open below the roof for a family or farm name. The barn quilt star block is the kind of pattern painted on a board and hung on a barn wall: cut it as a stencil, or cut it from vinyl and stick it on a painted square of plywood. The sliding barn door is drawn for labels and for signs that point the way to the house.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a red barn with white doors?

Use the red barn in five colours. Cut the barn layer from red, the trim layer from white and the roof from dark grey or black, then stack them in that order. The trim layer holds the door frames, the cross braces and the window frames.

What goes inside the barn monogram frame?

A name, usually. The open panel is about 50 mm wide and 40 mm tall when the barn is 100 mm tall. Type the name in your cutting software and weld the letters to the frame where they touch it, or cut them separately and place them on the backing.

How big should a barn quilt be?

Barn quilts on real barns are large, often 1.2 or 2.4 metres square, and are painted. This block scales to any size because it is all straight lines. For a porch sign, cut it as a vinyl stencil at 300 to 600 mm and paint through it.
