Sizes, materials and the fine parts of a yorkie
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. A yorkie is all hair, so these shapes have more small points than the other dogs in the library: the beard ends in five or six tufts, the ears come to a tip and the bow has two small loops with open middles. In vinyl, cut a face at 80 mm or wider so the middles of the bow loops, about 6 mm across at full size, weed cleanly. In 3 mm plywood keep faces at 150 mm or more, or the points of the beard become fragile.
The strands of hair are slits about 2 mm wide at full size. They stop short of the outline, so nothing comes loose, and on a laser they cut as single clean lines. If you want a plainer face for a small sticker, delete the strand slits in your cutting software and keep only the eyes, the nose and the bow.
Which yorkie for which job
The face, the peeking yorkie and the layered face suit shirts, mugs and car windows. The show coat silhouette is a solid curtain of hair with a wavy hem, which makes it the sturdiest side view for wood and acrylic. The sitting silhouette is the one for small stickers. The paw print is five loose pads, so use transfer tape in vinyl or a backing sheet in card.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I change the colour of the bow?
Yes. Use the layered yorkie face: the bow is its own layer, so cut it from any colour you like, or from glitter vinyl. On the single-colour faces the bow is part of the head, so cut the whole file again in a second colour and trim that copy down to the bow.
Which file suits a yorkie with a short puppy cut?
The yorkie standing, the sitting silhouette, the outline and the cute puppy all show a trimmed coat with the legs visible. Only the Yorkshire terrier in show coat has floor-length hair. The faces suit either, because most yorkies keep a beard and a topknot whatever the body trim.
How small can I cut the yorkie face?
About 60 mm wide in vinyl if you are patient, and 80 mm comfortably. Below that the open middles of the bow loops and the tips of the beard get too small to weed. For anything smaller, use the sitting silhouette, which has no inside cuts at all.
